Osteo-arthritis is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. It can affect any joint, though it most commonly affects joints in the hands, feet, spine and large weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees. As the disease progresses, the affected joints are stiff and painful and usually feel worse the more they are used throughout the day.
